Justin Wong's Biography

Active in the fighting game scene for over a decade and witnessing the decline and phoenix-like rebirth of fighting games as a viable competitive genre, very few players in the fighting game scene have seen and experienced more than Justin Wong. Growing up on the East Coast, Justin first found the drive to take his fighting game skills to an entirely new level while playing against regulars at New York City’s Chinatown Fair arcade – and he hasn’t looked back since.

Renowned for years as one of America’s premier fighting game champions (and star of world-famous EVO moment #37 meme), Justin’s combination of skill and dedication is nearly unrivaled among his peers. With over 40 major titles under his belt split among games such as Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Super Street Fighter 4: AE, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat 9, as well as multiple appearances at Japan’s Super Battle Opera tournament, Justin’s success in the scene is legendary. The “Wong Factor” – Justin’s notorious ability to swing a match back in his favor under nearly impossible odds – has provided entertainment for thousands of fans and has struck fear into the hearts of many opponents worldwide.

2009 saw Justin not only break the world record for longest fighting game win streak (300-0), but also take first-place in the GameStop Street Fighter IV US National Tournament. Following the launch of Street Fighter IV and the growth of the fighting game scene, he quickly became renowned as the best Street Fighter player in the United States, with notable performances in nearly every tournament he attended. In 2011, Justin placed top 8 at EVO's MvC3 tournament as well as several notable victories in SSFIV.

In 2012, Justin was absolutely on fire, taking home first-place finishes at CEO 2012, UFGT8, and Canada Cup and second-place finishes at ECT4, Winter Brawl 6, and Final Round XV in SSFIV:AE 2012. His accomplishments in UMvC3 were no less impressive with first-place finishes at CEO 2012, Toryuken 2012, and Canada Cup. Justin also brought the “Wong Factor” to Japan this year for SBO 2012′s UMvC3 tournament where he took another first-place spot, the first for an American player at SBO. His performance in 2013 has continued to impress with top three placements in both Marvel and AE in CEO 2013, ECT5, and Winter Brawl. At EVO 2013, he was a part of some of the best Marvel matches EVO has ever seen. His sets against ChrisG and FS.EMP.Flocker had everyone cheering, and he earned a hard-fought second place. He met these two opponents again the following year at 2014's EVO, eventually taking out both GG.NYChrisG and Filipino Champ to regain his title as the strongest Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 player in the world. The ample presence of the "Wong Factor" providing several ridiculous comebacks (including Justin's final match against Filipino Champ, during which his Akuma came back from near-death to clinch the win) certainly didn't hurt.

2015 saw several notable victories for Justin, with first-place wins across both Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Ultra Street Fighter IV at events around the country, including NWM, NCR, and KiT. He also battled his way to a seat as a finalist at the annual Capcom Cup Finals in San Francisco. Now, Justin is setting his sights on new competition in Street Fighter V -- look for his Karin and Chun Li to make waves at upcoming tournaments throughout 2016.

In addition to the tournament circuit, Justin has also made his appearance in mainstream media from MTV News to the Spike TV Video Game Awards show. He was also a contestant on WCG Ultimate Gamer. As one of the world’s top fighting game players, Justin continues to surprise and entertain fans of Evil Geniuses.
